Before I arrived, I’d braced myself for the typical tourist overload in Ao Nang. I quickly realized it wasn’t my vibe. Instead, I opted for Krabi Town, and I was immediately blown away by its chilled-out authenticity. I extended my stay simply to lose myself in the local markets and watch the sunset over the river with the locals – a potent reminder that the ‘right’ base in Krabi truly depends on what you’re after.

Ao nang: the energetic hub

Ao Nang is undeniably the main draw, a boisterous beach town brimming with activity. It’s perfect for those who crave island hopping, scooter adventures, and a vibrant nightlife. Pros: Great tourist infrastructure, boat trips galore, a pulsating nightlife. Cons: Overly touristy, congested, and often very loud. Expect a dense maze of accommodations, trendy cafes, and souvenir shops – and be prepared to be approached constantly for boat trips or massages. The beach itself is busy, dominated by longtail boats.

K-Bunk Ao Nang Center offers a social party hostel experience, complete with organized activities. Anawin Bungalows provides a nostalgic Thailand feel, though be prepared for a rustic experience with a few geckos.

Just a stone’s throw from Ao Nang, Noppharat Thara Beach offers a more spacious and relaxed atmosphere. The beach market is a fantastic place to grab a bite and browse for souvenirs, and the nightlife is considerably calmer. Best for: Independent travelers and families.

Located at the northern tip of Krabi, Tub Kaek is the ultimate escape. This secluded beach, surrounded by a national park, offers unparalleled tranquility. Best for: Romance and total peace. Tup Kaek Sunset Beach Resort is a great place to unwind.
