Kitchen design trends: experts reveal the best layouts for function & style
For homeowners seeking to maximize both space and culinary flow, the kitchen remains the heart of the Home. Four distinct kitchen layouts are gaining traction, each offering a unique blend of efficiency and aesthetic appeal, according to leading interior designers.
Galley kitchens: efficiency in compact spaces
Galley kitchens, characterized by parallel countertops, are proving surprisingly adaptable. Kelly Emerson, senior designer at Aidan Design, champions this layout, especially for smaller dwellings. “Everything is within arm’s reach, creating a super tight and practical work triangle,” she explains. However, she cautions that in larger spaces, the narrow configuration can become restrictive.
Deborah Sauri, co-founder of TriVistaUSA Design + Build, corroborates this, noting that while the tight work triangle is beneficial in smaller spaces, it can become a hindrance in larger homes.
But don't dismiss the galley kitchen entirely. Marnie Oursler, president and owner of Marnie Custom Homes, highlights its practicality as a viable alternative to double-island designs in spaces where square footage is limited, particularly when incorporating an island for added seating.

L-shaped kitchens: a versatile favorite
The L-shaped kitchen, with its cabinets wrapping around a corner, remains a perennial favorite. Sauri calls it a top choice because it avoids feeling cramped. “You can create that comfortable work triangle between the sink, stove, and refrigerator,” she says. “You don’t have to take unnecessary steps, and you’re not boxed in.”
Oursler agrees, suggesting an L-shaped layout paired with an island maximizes seating and creates a natural flow for entertaining.

U-shaped kitchens: maximizing workspace
U-shaped kitchens offer a complete enclosure, providing ample counter space and storage. “It really wraps around you while you work,” Sauri elaborates. “With counters and cabinets on three sides, everything you need is just a step or two away.” She recommends integrating an island into larger U-shaped kitchens for additional seating and surface area, and maximizing corner cabinet storage.
The key takeaway? The ideal layout hinges on individual needs and lifestyle. Sauri advises prioritizing storage requirements and daily routines to avoid frustration down the line. A well-considered layout isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality.
And while these layouts offer distinct advantages, the most successful kitchen design ultimately reflects the homeowner’s unique habits and priorities. After all, a kitchen isn't just a room; it’s the hub of a Home.
