Initial cleanup: the foundation of brush care

The first step to preserving your paintbrushes is proper cleaning. It’s crucial to remove all traces of paint immediately after use. For latex paint, use water. For oil-based paints, a solvent is your best bet. Scrape off any excess paint with a scraper, then thoroughly wash the bristles with warm, soapy water. Don’t forget to rinse well until all the paint residue is gone. This initial cleaning prevents the paint from drying and hardening, which can damage the bristles.

Drying and reshaping: restoring your brushes

Once cleaned, reshape the bristles back to their original form. This is particularly important for angled brushes. Gently tap the bristles against your hand, leg, or a flat surface to remove any trapped water and restore their shape. You can also use a brush comb to help with this process. This method can preserve your brushes for up to two days, giving you peace of mind knowing they're ready to go when you are.

Storage matters: keeping brushes in good condition

Proper storage is essential for long-term brush preservation. Ideally, store your brushes vertically to prevent the bristles from bending or splaying. A brush holder with individual slots is ideal, but even a simple canister works well. Avoid overstuffing the container, as this can also damage the bristles. Keep your brushes in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. If humidity is a concern, consider using an airtight container or adding silica gel packs to absorb moisture.
