Historic kitchen gets a bridgerton-inspired refresh in compact space
Forget cramped quarters. This Wisconsin kitchen proves style and romance thrive even in small spaces. The renovation at a 1914 Tudor-era Home masterfully blends historic charm with modern functionality, evoking the elegance of the Netflix series Bridgerton.
A harmonious blend of old and new
Designed by Anna Franklin of Stone House Collective, the kitchen honors the Home's original architecture while catering to the needs of a contemporary family. The property, nestled among century-old trees on Lake Michigan, is a testament to classic charm.
Franklin embraced the Home's historical character, selecting period-inspired accents like soapstone countertops, handmade crackled DeVol tiles, and unlacquered brass finishes. Original hardware was restored, seamlessly connecting the kitchen to the rest of the historic house. This attention to detail ensures the space feels authentic to its era.
But the design isn't solely focused on historical accuracy. An oversized window floods the kitchen with natural light, and a plant shelf nods to traditional English homes. A custom radiator cover in the scullery provides a cozy spot for tea – a detail Bridgerton's Sophie would appreciate.
A previously awkward wall was transformed into a striking plate wall, a solution that respects the Home's architecture while creating a focal point. Classic dishware and open glass storage add a lived-in, collected feel. The addition of a dedicated scullery, a common feature in early 20th-century homes, enhances functionality for a busy family.
Franklin opted for materials designed to age gracefully, including unlacquered brass, soapstone, and butcher block, ensuring the kitchen develops a warm patina over time. While white subway tile provides a clean backdrop, Shaker cabinetry, a dark wood table, and vintage-style faucets add a touch of whimsy.
