Yokoji advises using a special, enzyme-free washing solution and a cold-water wash. It’s vital to use a machine large enough to accommodate the comforter; a 3.5 cubic foot machine is generally needed for a queen-size comforter.

The process starts with a gentle wash cycle. Spread the comforter evenly in the machine, select the delicate cycle, and use only half the normal amount of detergent. Cold water is a must. Follow with a low-heat or air-fluff drying cycle, checking frequently to ensure the down is completely dry. Clumping indicates residual water.

A crucial tip: remove the comforter halfway through the drying cycle to manually redistribute the down – repeating this 2-3 times for larger comforters. Adding wool dryer balls can help prevent clumping and static. Avoid high dryer heat, as this can damage the delicate feathers.
