LED Flickering? The Problem Might Be Your Dimmer, Not the Bulb
Many homeowners experience flickering LEDs when using a dimmer switch, often assuming the bulb is faulty. However, the issue frequently lies with the dimmer itself. Older dimmer switches designed for incandescent bulbs lack the capacity to handle the lower power draw of LEDs, leading to an unstable electrical signal.
Understanding Dimmer Minimum Load
Dimmer switches require a minimum power load to function correctly. Traditional dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs, which consumed significantly more wattage. LEDs, by contrast, use considerably less power. If the total wattage in the circuit falls below the dimmer’s minimum load requirement, the electrical signal becomes erratic, causing the LED to flicker, buzz, or fail to adjust its brightness.

Bulb and Dimmer Compatibility
LEDs dimmable bulbs are designed to work with compatible dimmer switches. Older halogen bulbs replaced with LEDs without updating the dimmer pose a high risk of flickering. It’s crucial to ensure your dimmer is specifically designed for LED loads.
Bulb Base Types
French homes predominantly use two bulb base types: E14 (small screw) and GU10 (bayonet). E14 is the standard for bedside lamps, chandeliers, and decorative fixtures, characterized by a smaller screw size. GU10 is commonly found in recessed spotlights and directional lighting, utilizing a quarter-turn bayonet fitting. B22 (two-prong bayonet) is still present in older homes but less frequent for smaller lights.
Identifying the Correct Bulb Base
To determine the correct bulb base, carefully examine the existing bulb or the fixture’s socket. Measuring the diameter of the bulb base will quickly identify the type. A 14mm diameter is an E14, while a 10mm distance between the pins indicates a GU10.
