Denver gardener finds prairie revival and muskrat surprise in wash park
A recent stroll through denver’s beloved Washington Park revealed a blossoming landscape and a surprising encounter with local wildlife.
New prairie garden takes root
Dorothy White, a passionate gardener and voice behindGarden Whispers, explored the park’s west side, discovering a vibrant blue flax installation within the Big Garden restoration project. The striking blue hues added a touch of prairie sweetness to the ongoing effort to establish a thriving pollinator corridor across the city. White eagerly anticipates the garden's full development this summer and fall, connecting her future plot to a broader network of habitats.
‘Austrian copper’ rose blooms amidst park’s beauty
Amidst the transformation, White spotted a stunning ‘Austrian Copper’ rose – a hardy, two-toned specimen displaying orange-red blossoms accented with yellow at the base. Sources indicate occasional reversion to a pure yellow, a characteristic exhibited here. This resilient rose stands out amongst the park’s diverse flora.
Muskrat discovery adds a wild twist
Beyond the gardens, a visit to Grasmere Lake yielded an unexpected sighting: a muskrat! The encounter, sparked by a query about the animal’s identity – “Beaver? Nutria?” – provided a delightful reminder of the diverse ecosystem thriving within the park. White, recalling a childhood fondness for the Captain & Tennille song “Muskrat Love,” watched the creatures busily foraging for marsh plants.
Park expansion and community connection
With the purchase of a bungalow just blocks from Wash Park, White anticipates integrating the park seamlessly into her daily routine. She looks forward to contributing to the park’s continued growth and engaging with the local community. The park’s blend of gardens, lakes, pathways, and recreational facilities provides a vital green space for Denver residents.
