Designers reveal the 4 most overused home trends they're tired of

As we bid farewell to 2025 and look ahead to 2026, professional designers are weighing in on the trends they're most eager to see fade away from homes.

Designers Sara Swabb and Tracy Morris agree that spaces that are too perfectly coordinated can feel sterile and uninspiring. 'Spaces where everything coordinates a little too perfectly—identical woods, matching metals, one consistent palette—end up feeling staged,' says Swabb.

Fixing overly matched spaces

To add more character to your home, try mixing textures, incorporating vintage or handmade pieces, and displaying personal items. 'Add imperfect pieces to weave in that soulfulness,' advises Swabb.

2. Exaggerated shapes and curves

Swabb is ready to move on from ultra-curvy furniture and details, finding them overused. 'Structured pieces with more subtle curves give you the same softness with greater longevity,' she notes.

3. Gray tones dominating

Morris is also eager to see an end to the prevalence of cool, flat grays in home decor. 'Those grays can make a space feel lifeless,' she says, recommending warmer, natural tones instead.

4. Furniture sets and matching pieces

Morris suggests getting rid of matching furniture or certain pieces within sets to create more visual interest. 'Rooms look more interesting with a mix of textures, finishes, and styles,' she states.
