Summerhome garden blooms with vibrant cactus display – open days tour announced
SummerHome Garden is currently showcasing a breathtaking explosion of color, with its cactus collection transformed into a jewel-toned spectacle. Owner Lisa Negri recently spent two hours meticulously photographing the garden’s unique crevice display, captivated by the backlit blooms of prickly pear, claret cup cactus, and a variety of spiny beauties.
A rocky mountain oasis
Nestled against the sun-drenched south-facing wall of a garage, the cacti thrive within a carefully constructed crevice garden, mimicking the rugged landscape of the nearby Rocky Mountains. The harmonious pairing of hot-pink prickly pear flowers and pale-pink penstemon creates a stunning visual contrast.

Close-up details reveal unexpected beauty
A closer inspection reveals a sprawling prickly pear, erupting with vibrant yellow-orange flowers, while a red claret cup cactus showcases Derby-hat flowers. Lisa is still identifying a particular pink-flowering cactus, tentatively labeled a ‘hedgehog’ species. Pollinators, including bees and a green sweat bee, are actively drawn to the abundant blossoms.

Supporting local ecosystems
The garden’s design prioritizes biodiversity, featuring ‘bug snug’ tepees that offer vital shelter for overwintering insects. Visitors are welcome, and a furry friend – leashed dogs – were recently greeted with a pat from Ms. Negri. A trough overflowing with diverse succulents, rescued from a nearby demolition site, adds further visual interest.

Community engagement and sustainability
Lisa Negri is a passionate advocate for ecologically sound gardening practices. A large bee hotel provides nesting habitats for solitary bees, crucial for pollination. Subtle accents like ‘Sucker Punch’ chokecherries add textural contrast and burgundy foliage. Mount Olympus sage (Salvia ringens) provides a striking backdrop, beautifully backlit.

Don’t miss the open days tour
This Saturday, June 13th, SummerHome Garden will be open to the public as part of the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Tour.
